Linux on PowerPC: Which one to install?

Linux is so easy to install on PowerPC computers. Several are installing it now, and that's because itt is super easy and also you get a modern day Operating System. We heard about a lot of Distros but it is hard to settle for one. Well not hard, but you always look for experience with Linux in the Power Architecture, and in this article I will review two Linux that are the best for the PowerPC ibooks/imacs

YellowDog Linux

All these years, my favorite Linux Distro has been YellowDog Linux for PowerPC. I like it because it lets you install it either from command line or using the Graphical Installer.

I strongly recommend using the Command Line installer, you get to choose anything you want to be installed and you learn a lot about installing Linux. Not only that, the best part about the command line installer is that it will not install you Gnome by default (unlike the Graphical Installer) Instead you will be shown a list of desktop environments. My favorite, and most stable is KDE.

The good thing about YellowDog is that it is always updating. It comes with an automated updater app, which you can disable anytime you want. What I like the most is that I can download apps, and install them using terminal. This way is better since you can actually see if any dependency is being installed (which you don't see in the regular installer app) and you get a detailed view of any error or warning.

Kubuntu 12.04 LTS

Ok why Kubuntu? Why not Lubuntu or Xubuntu or even Ubuntu? First, I don't like Gnome or XFCE. Second, Kubuntu is far more stable for the Power Architecture. The second reason is because it is a Long Term Support. You will get support for about 5 years, so if you choose not to upgrade to 12.10 or any new version, you will receive security updates, and enhancements.

Kubuntu and YellowDog are good replacements for Mac OS. Each comes with ways to watch Youtube (if that's what you're worrying) Both comes with Office suite applications, graphical applications, video and music playback applications, well try it yourself to see this is true. However keep in mind that they won't act like Mac OS. Applications such as Photoshop or iMovie won't be available in Linux. You'll have to adapt with what you get.

You can get Kubuntu 12.04 here!
